Introducing Novya

Hi

Today I'm introducing Novya.  Her name means Butterfly Chaser and it fits her personality. She can go out to do something and get side tracked more easily than any one else I know.

Nana Kathie was born in Wallowa County, Oregon. We still live close to there. That is where the first book about Kaya starts. Novya is a Nez Perce indian like Kaya.

Nana Kathie and Aunt TracyAnn try to take any visiting girls to Wallowa Lake, to the grave of Old Chief Joseph and the flat where Kaya raced her horse.  And there is a museum in Wallowa they try to take them to.

Novya loves to go to Native American events museums and historical sites.  She's very proud of her heritage.

She is looking for books now about edible and medicinal plants that are native to the northwest.

Last week she she was studying Camas root.  She read a journal entry by Narcissa Whitman stating that the Nez Perce indians had introduced Camas root to their party when they came west to settle at the Whitman Mission in Walla Walla, Wa.  We live fairly close to the mission, too.

Kaya enjoys sharing what she is learning.  Logan and I want to know about useful plants we might find while on our camping trips.

Her room is decorated with owls and eagles.  She studies both.  She really enjoyed the eagles on the Alaska cruise she went on.

She had a lot of fun on the Alaska cruise.  She was the only one of the girls on the cruise that finished their scavanger hunt.

She is learning to do bead work for decorating her clothes.  Right now there is a belt for herself on her loom.  I have asked for a hat band for Christmas.  I haven't gotten a "yes" or "no".  Guess we'll all have to wait for Christmas to find out if I get it.

She loves to race the horses.  She's so fearless and such a good rider she usually wins.  She's a lot of fun.
